Janet holds an MBA and MSW in Community Planning from Boston College. Most recently, she was Director of Resource Development and Training at the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom, a national nonprofit that brings Muslim and Jewish women together to develop friendships and break down stereotypes. She created videos, guides, and dialogues to develop skills for engaging in difficult conversations and constructive ways to respond to hate.
Janet is also the founder and former director of Youth LEAD, (formerly Interfaith Action), an award-winning non-profit dedicated to helping high school and college students develop the ability to respectfully navigate tough conversations about highly controversial topics, the courage to understand people who hold profoundly different beliefs and the skills to put thought into action.
Through her transformative program, Janet’s organization gained national and international recognition from academia, including the Pluralism Project at Harvard University, in the media, featured on Linda Ellerbee’s Nick News as “youth waging peace” in the name of religion, and with international partnerships, including the Tony Blair Faith Foundation and the Jordanian Coexistence Research Center.
Janet has also been called upon by the U.S. Department of State to host visiting delegations of scholars and religious leaders from the Muslim world to help them understand how Muslim youth how to integrate their identities and navigate across religious and cultural divides. She was sent by the U.S. Department of State to Jordan and Egypt, as part of their program “Islam: Scholarship and Practice in the U.S.” In 2014, Janet received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School.
